New Windsor Jail to cost $336 million

SoC Editor: Think about all crime-preventing community services $335 million dollars could buy. Drug rehabilitation centers, counseling, food banks, self-employment and education loans, etc. Who can justify building a maximum security prison when crime rates are falling and the public shows a clear disposition against building new prisons. The only positive aspect of this project being touted are the short-term benefits to our local economy. Very sad.

The province announced Monday that Windsor’s new 315-bed maximum security prison will cost $336 million to build and maintain, under a 30-year contract negotiated with Forum Social Infrastructure.
