Questioning the ACTION Team

Addressing Crime Trends in our Communities (ACTION) is a project of Hamilton Police Services that claims to be targetting violent crime. However, when we look at what ACTION is actually doing, this large increase in policing is in fact a crack-down on minor offenses and crimes of poverty. This is happening within a context of rapid gentrification in Hamilton's core, and ACTION's priorities are geared primarily towards the needs of business owners downtown. Media coverage of policing in the downtown has been "shallowly congratulatory", and this article is the first in what will be a series exploring the real priorities and effects of the ACTION teams' deployment.
